RIP Henry (I)

I painted this portrait for a friend who recently lost one of her best friends. I met this guy one time, a truly mellow king of a soul. I actually didn't mean for this to be the final version - I started out with the face and ears in colored pencils on regular 11"x18" paper, then did some painting with acrylics to fill in the rest. I like the unfinished, messy quality of it, balanced with the concentrated detail of the face.

Rest in peace, Henry.

IT'S FINALLY HERE! Ladies and gentleman, the BEST month is back. To kick it off, here's my lovely mother all done up, Photoshop-style, as what I'm calling the Queen of Crows. I honestly didn't set out to make this picture quite so...elaborate, but isn't she amazing? Below are most of the various images that went into creating her (there were a few more crows, I think.) Love/Sick is a play about love in nine parts, chronicling the arc of a relationship, from a first meeting to a divorce, with nine different relationships. In the nine years we've worked together, I've gotten to create designs for Waiting For Godot, She Creatures, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and All In The Timing. A friend commissioned a portrait of her baby with unicorns and rainbows, so I created THIS for her a few years ago. Now that baby is a little older and she has a brother, so this was created for the two of them. Yay sparkling mythological beasts in space!
